If you are suffering from knee pain and you are looking for treatment then get in touch with Your Sports Therapist. We are a professional sports injury clinic based in Cheshire, with a lot of experience dealing with all cases of knee pain. Our testimonials speak for themselves.
At Your Sports Therapist, we have treated a wide variety of knee injuries with good success! Plus, from Chris’s personal experience with knee injuries, he can offer first hand advice when guiding you through your treatment and rehabilitation.
Generally, knee problems often have very localised symptoms, especially if the injury is a result of an awkward tackle in Football or Rugby. More chronic knee pain is often seen in running and jumping based sports where other structures in and around the knee can be causing your pain.
The different knee pain treatments available
Treatment programmes for knee problems often involve simple strengthening and balance exercises. Sometimes taping techniques are used to help offset and/or recruit certain muscles to reduce your pain.
In some cases your injury may require surgery; especially with Cruciate Ligament and Meniscal Tears. In this case, Your Sports Therapist work with your GP to refer you to the most appropriate specialist for your problem. Your Sports Therapist also specialises in post-operative rehabilitation of these types of injuries to help you return to what you love doing, even stronger than you were before!

Causes of knee pain
- Ligament Sprains – Often the result of an awkward twist or fall where a “pop” is heard, or a feeling of “giving way” is felt when walking and moving suddenly. Swelling may occur immediately following injury, early treatment and rehab in these type of injuries is key to a swift return to sport.
- Patellofemoral Pain – This is related to pain in and around the patella (kneecap) whereby certain muscles can become weak, leading to other muscles becoming overactive and pulling the patella out of alignment which leads to very aggravating knee pain especially when walking up and down stairs.
- ITB Syndrome – A very common injury found in runners and cyclists where the nature of their training is very repetitive. The Iliotibial Band (ITB) runs down the outside of the thigh and attaches to the outside of the knee. Over time, this tendon can become irritated and rub against the bony landmarks of the knee causing pain when running and cycling. Some patients may even find that there is a localised pocket of swelling around where they are getting their pain. Muscle imbalances or poor technique during exercise can be a major attribute to ITB syndrome.
- Meniscal Tears – The menisci are the pieces of cartilage inside the knee that help provide cushioning and stability at the knee. Tears in the cartilage can often be painful and give a sense of instability when walking and/or turning.
